LEARNING BY DESIGN: Specialist Literacy and Learning Support
English and Learning
Some children need support with English because it isn't their first language. Others may understand English well but need help developing their academic language, school skills or confidence as learners.
I provide individual support that is tailored to the child's current level and the demands of their school environment.
Sessions can focus on developing English language skills, strengthening areas of difficulty at school, or helping a child become a more confident and independent learner.
What might we work on?
This can include:
-
vocabulary and language development
-
grammar
-
reading comprehension
-
writing and written expression
-
sentence structure
-
speaking and communication
-
understanding and responding to texts
-
organising ideas
-
study and learning strategies
-

-
building confidence in using English

What does a 45-minute session look like?
Sessions are built around the child's individual goals.
We might work with a text, develop vocabulary, practise a particular language skill, work on writing, or use schoolwork as a starting point for addressing an underlying difficulty.
I aim to make learning active and meaningful rather than simply working through exercises. Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, make connections and gradually take greater responsibility for their own learning.
The content of each session can therefore look quite different from one child to another — because the learning is designed around the learner.
